Upgrading an iPAQ to Windows Mobile 2005
The battery of my HP iPAQ hx2110 was depleted for the second time since I bought it, and I lost my settings and preferences (the important files were stored on the SDCard). So I decided to upgrade from Windows Mobile 2003 SE to Windows Mobile 2005 - you can purchase the upgrade at HP.
The flash procedure (writing the new ROM) went well, it took about 5 minutes and there were no problems. After the flash procedure was completed, the boot screen hanged for about 2 minutes. After that the AC led got lit up again and I was running Windows Mobile 5.0.
Then it took me about an hour to figure out why ActiveSync would not detect the device and synchronize. The device was detected by Windows as a Windows Mobile-Based Device and the drivers got installed, but ActiveSync would show Disconnected. The network status icon in the tray that was added by ActiveSync 4.1 was still trying to retrieve an IP via DHCP. That’s because the new ActiveSync has changed, and devices using Windows Mobile 2005 connect to the computer through a Network connection. After a few minutes of wondering why the Pocket PC didn’t get an IP assigned by the so called DHCP server, I realized I had the DHCP service turned off. I turned it on and ActiveSync went without problems.
And in spite of what others say about Windows Mobile 5.0 or ActiveSync 4.1, things definitely improved.
