The difference between directories and folders

What’s the difference between directories and folders? They are the same thing, right? Wrong.

Directories are folders where files are stored. Folders are more than that, they are namespaces that can store various things more special than files, such as Control Panel items. Control Panel is a folder, it’s not a directory because it doesn’t store files.
